Surfing In Australia-best season or month of the year?

I’m doing research for a book and I need to know when is the peak season for surfing in Australia. Specifically on the Gold Coast south of Brisbane there is a beach called Surfer’s Paradise. I have a character competing in a surfing competition and need to know what month of the year this would likely take place.
